The Leg Up Program strives to achieve our mission statement by assisting homeless individuals and at risk persons by helping them navigate and leverage our network of coordinated services, including:

We also provide our clients with individual life skills coaching to mentally prepare them for personalized job placement.

By continuously monitoring, mentoring and assisting them as they progress in their journey to success and independent living, we offer a much needed support system during the crucial transition period from homeless to hopeful to home.

Dr. Alonzo Peterson, PhD. | Executive Director

“Advocating on behalf of those in our society who need a voice, is one of the most crucial things we can accomplish.”

 

 

 

Dr. Alonzo Peterson has been working in the non-profit sector for over 15 years and has a passion for serving the un-served.  He is the former Executive Director for the Denton County Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and led the anti-crime initiative, “Pleasant Grove Weed and Seed,” that led to a neighborhood reduction in crime.  He has had positions of leadership within the homeless services community in Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant Counties.  Alonzo has conducted a number of training’s and workshops on the local, state, and national level for organizations including University of North Texas, National Coalition of Homeless Veterans, Texas Homeless Network, One Star Foundation, and the Center for Non-Profits.  His first book, The Meek Will Inherit the Earth, but They Won’t Keep It:  Lessons on Person-Organization Fit will be available on Amazon in 2018.

Kate Morrell | Development Manager

“Kate Morrell has been a language enthusiast from early on, and utilizes her background as a writer to provide creative content for the LegUp Program. She enjoys studying philosophy and theology, having grown up as a, “P.K.” (pastor’s kid), and it is her passion to seek truth in all things and enact love to each person she comes in contact with. Kate spent six years as a teacher and private tutor, imparting her love of language, laughter, and literature to children and families all over DFW. Her experiences have lent her fresh ideas, attention to detail, and perseverance into: maintaining standards, executing daily business, event planning, marketing, and generating media for the LegUp Program. Kate has been a member of the Sierra Club since 2014, and the environment in Fort Worth is one of her happiest devotions. When not at work, she spends time with friends and family, gardening, and going to baseball games, (Go Rangers!) She and Patrick, their two rescued pit-bulls, and two rescued tortoiseshell cats live in the Historic South-side of Fort Worth.

Tonya Jones | Employment & Housing Navigator

Originating from Coatesville, PA, Tonya came to Texas by way of Vilseck, Germany. Her background as a Private First Class in the Army, has given Tonya a gift for structuring, discipline, a no-quit attitude, a a huge heart for service to those in need. She trained as a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator for several years before getting married and moving to Texas. Upon arrival, she was a stay at home mom before entering and graduating from the Fort Worth Police Academy in 2005. Tonya worked as a patrol officer for the City of Fort Worth for seven years. These skills and many others make her an essential part of our team! As the Employment & Housing Navigator for The LegUp Program, Tonya brings strength, stability, and clarity to the experience of our clients, coursework, and workshops. When she is not at work, Tonya focuses on her family. She has two children, Shane and Damarron, and two grandchildren Amari and Ava.

Dr. Michael S. Haro | Client Coach/ Trainer

“Self-awareness and understanding are developed and enhanced through trial and error experiences.”

 

After years of dedicated volunteerism, Dr. Mike Haro works as a consultant, coach, and trainer for The LegUp Program.  He brings he many skills to life by teaching and coaching, “Self Coaching Skills,” that he developed to help individuals enhance their life journey. In addition to this, he publishes a daily, “One Minute Mind Opener,” on the Leg Up website, and publishes articles and books on the subject of self improvement.   Dr. Mike, and his wife Lynne, moved to Benbrook, TX in September 2013 to be closer their two grown sons and their families. Dr. Mike taught at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, was a licensed psychologist in private practice, consulted and provided training to private, public, and government organizations.
